Staying far enough back so Clint wouldn’t get suspicious, Jack followed the van west on County Road 10, the main street through Detroit Lakes. The traffic was light at this time of the night or morning. Whichever it was. They didn’t have any cars between them. Bright street lights and stop lights lit up an intersection ahead. “He’ll turn south there to Pelican,” Jack said. It was the main intersection with Highway 59 running south.

“What if the light turns red?” Cyrus asked. “We can’t pull right up behind him. He might see us in his mirrors.”

Jack let up on the gas and let the car decelerate, giving them a little more space. “I’ll just drive by and double back if I have to.”

“You’ve done this before. I forgot. You’re a trained professional.”

“A few times,” Jack said.

Clint signaled and pulled into the left turn lane. The light was green. He turned south onto the two-lane highway. The light turned yellow.

Jack slowed.

“Go,” Cyrus said.

Jack stopped for the red light. His turn signal blinking for a left turn. Clint’s taillights moved from the lights of the intersection into the dark towards Pelican Rapids. “We’ll give him some space. Didn’t want him glancing back as we rushed through the light.”

Cyrus lit another cigar and blew the smoke out the window. Jack waited for a count of five. “See anybody?” he asked.

“Just us and Clint getting away,” Cyrus said.

Jack turned left on the red light and followed Clint south into the dark.
